A roommate at college on first time cooking rice, cooked the whole packet. By the time it was ready, ALL of our meager supply of saucepans were full of cooked rice and sitting all over the flat.

The very first real dish I ever tried to cook was my mom's spaghetti, which I loved and thought was above all other spaghetti out there. I had her email me the recipe so I could cook it for my theater friends in college.

But I had no idea what a garlic "clove" was so you can probably see where this is going but I quickly got frustrated with how goddamned long it took to mince two entire "cloves" (ahem) of garlic and how the hell did my mom prep this right after work on a weekday yet seem to make the whole dish in like 30 minutes flat?

Needless to say, the dish was a massive hit with the college crowd. Though god knows no one could have stood near any of us for the whole weekend after :P

I think we all have stories like this! My mum gave me a recipe for shepherds pie to make in home ec class but she didn't tell me to chop up the potato before boiling it for the mash so I boiled it whole. 40 minutes later and I couldn't work out why the potato was still so hard!

Great site. I've just subscribed and recommended you (although I can't afford to for all the content I like). Since I'm just getting started, I'd greatly appreciate it if you could reciprocate---you clearly don't need my support, but I'd love yours. FYI, I'm not trolling for recommendations: I look at about a dozen newsletters for each one that resonates with me.
