I love this post, and have so many thoughts.

First of all, the mention of those trad-wives. I was raised in the Mormon church. And I know the patriarchal system they live in. It's especially bad in Mormonism as they believe that men will be polygamist in the afterlife. So...perfection is necessary when you're competing with a harem of future, heavenly wives.

On another note, I love the mention of the statistics of men/women who cook. Even when women have jobs, they take on that load. And yes - when it's Nigella Lawson or Martha Stewart, they are domestic Goddesses. If it's Anthony Bourdain (who I liked, no disrespect) or Mario Batalli, then we call them chefs.

Food for thought. (pun intended ;)

these statistics are fascinating! any idea why the cooking gap is widening again since 2010?

I don't know but I wonder if it could be thanks to the "return to tradition" trend we're seeing right now. Interestingly, Italy bucks the trend, more men cook there than women

This is such an important topic and incredibly relevant today. Every time I hear the word "homemaker" I cringe. No one would every call a man that's a private chef a homemaker. However, if you're a female baker or home cook you become a homemaker. I don't know if you've ever heard of a YouTuber named Meghan Rienks, but her baking videos with spills and profanity are so refreshing and human. We need more writing like yours!

I don’t know Meghan, but the other day I put together this video for a cake. My videos are very simple, and I’m not in them because I most definitely don’t wear flawless makeup (I hardly ever wear makeup) and I don’t own beautiful dresses. So you can only see my hands. And I think I have ugly hands, and I do lots of gardening and should really start using some lotion (lol). So, if you look closely you can see they are cracked.. and my nails .. definitely not done. In that video, I had also spilled flour and there’s a blob of batter on the counter. Ooops. I instinctively worry about these things, and I really don’t want to. I just remind myself it doesn’t matter, and still show videos like that.

I do appreciate videos that highlight the recipe or decorating as well. There’s something relaxing about it. I guess it’s the only form of ASMR I like lol. Do you post them on Substack?

Right?! I also find them relaxing, especially with the right music. I only just started taking videos. The plan was to put them on instagram, and to use Substack for writing, but I kinda feel like I could be sharing the videos here too. The mega bummer is that the ratio IG and SS support is completely different so I can’t simply repurpose them. I’ve shared some (or tiny bits of them) here, but in Notes only.
